Exploring · Saath

Something breaks at 11 p.m. You are not in the city.

Saath means “with”. A pipe bursts, the power goes, the help does not come — and it happens to your parent, alone, while you are in another country. One number would answer, and get a checked person there. A concept, not a service.

Ten things that need a person

  1. Someone should just be there
  2. A water leak or a burst pipe
  3. No power in the flat
  4. Locked out, or a door that will not lock
  5. The maid or attendant cannot come
  6. Emergency cleaning After a leak, a mess or a pest.
  7. A dead fridge, air conditioner, geyser or washing machine In 45 degrees an air conditioner is not a comfort item.
  8. No water A tanker needs somebody there to receive it.
  9. Gas: an empty cylinder, or a smell A smell is a safety call, not a delivery.
  10. Pests: a snake, bees, rats, wasps

The promise is the response, not the repair: someone answers, something useful happens within half an hour, and you are told plainly what cannot happen before morning.

What it can and cannot do.

It can

  • Answer at night, and do something useful within half an hour
  • Reach a checked person for a repair, and say plainly when nobody can come tonight
  • Keep a record of every task, including what could not be confirmed
  • Act on authority agreed in advance, so nothing waits for someone asleep in another timezone
  • Contain the damage tonight and hold the first real slot in the morning

It cannot

  • Anything medical. A fall, chest pain, breathlessness or bleeding belongs to the ambulance service and a hospital, not to a desk: the only job in those minutes is to call 108, call the neighbour and stay on the line
  • Send a plumber at one in the morning. Nobody can, so it is not promised: the leak is contained and the first morning slot is held
  • Promise an arrival time it cannot verify
  • Mark up anyone else's work: costs pass through at actuals, and our own fee is shown separately
  • Send someone into a home who has not been checked, however urgent it is

Where it would start

One street at a time.

Twenty households on one street are worth more than two hundred spread across a city: a shared run costs each home a fraction of a dedicated trip. It would start in one neighbourhood in Hyderabad.

Where this stands today

  • A concept, not a service. Nothing is for sale and there is no waiting list.
  • No price is decided, and no household has been signed up.
  • India first. It is not offered in Sweden or the EU.
  • The example above is made up: no real household, provider or price.
